Bus Rapid Transit between Amman and Zarqa cities
- General description of the project and its design:
- The BRT project between Amman and Zarqa cities is based on the operation of BRT buses between Amman and Zarqa through a special track with a length of (Approximately 20 km to provide public transportation services between Amman and Zarqa that are safe, regular, highly efficient, and environment friendly, through the rehabilitation and expansion of the Autostrad Al Zarqa, the implementation of many traffic improvements, and the operation of rapid-frequency buses with 183 buses with the latest specifications, including 49 articulated buses with a length of (18 m), in addition to establish passenger stations equipped with the latest technologies such as electronic payment systems, electronic ticket issuance and control systems inside the stations in Zarqa, Tariq and Al Mahatta Station, and linking the project within Amman city with the project between the cities of Amman and Zarqa through a joint operation project and networking with the Municipality of Amman at Al Mahatta station and Tariq Ain Al Ghazal.
- The BRT route was designed within the central island of Amman Zarqa Highway while maintaining the total capacity (3 lanes in each direction) to the Autostrad campus (60 meters).
- The highway was developed by increasing one lane in each direction and constructing new bridges and tunnels.
- Aims of the project:
- To provide sustainable, safe, efficient and effective mass public transport services between Amman and Zarqa.
- Promoting the public transport sector, its facilities and services, creating an investment environment and employing local labor.
- Reducing accidents and environmental pollution and maintaining the road network.
- Reducing the number of modes of transport, operational costs and fuel consumption.
- The project economic and social impact:
- Serving the residents of Amman and Zarqa and university students by providing them with a safe, comfortable and regular transportation system on a daily basis, and providing job opportunities for citizens.
- Reducing traffic congestion and traffic accidents, reducing fuel consumption, and maintaining a clean environment by reducing emissions from car exhausts.
- Routes and stations:
- number of trunk tracks is (1) :(Zarqa Station - Al Mahatta Station (Length)19 km)
- The number of major stations terminals is (2): Zarqa Station and Al Mahatta Station
- The number of intermediate stations is (4): Marka station, Polytinic station (Pepsi), Rusaifa station, and Military College station (Al Hashemite).
5. Project financing: The expected total cost is (approx213) million JOD (a loan from the Social Security Investment Fund + the Kuwaiti grant + the budget of the Ministry of Transport).
- Completion percentage
The actual current Completion percentage of the four packages for the implementation of the BRT project between the cities of Amman and Zarqa is about 86.4%.
- Completion of infrastructure works: end of 2023 - beginning of 2024.
- Joint operation of two BRT projects (inside Amman and Amman Zarqa): It is expected to take place within 2024.
